The Corporation http://www.thecorporation.tv/

Lots of good info, but a bit long-winded and with at times poor delivery. The DVD is coming in March-I plan on picking it up then. I definitely recommend the book by Joel Bakan: http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=62-0743247442-0

Manufacturing Consent, Noam Chomsky and the Media

Word to heard, Noam rocks the party that rocks the party. The film is overall excellent, with some great footage of Noam debating folks like William Buckley, Michael Foucault, and others. I own it, and I'm pretty sure Seth does too, so we can definitely have a screening soon!

Control Room

About al-Jazeera, the Arab news network, and their struggle to cover the war in Iraq. Much more informative than "Farenheit 911," for example, and well made. The sooner you see it, the better, because it will quickly be dated. 8 out of 10.

Life and Debt

Documentary by Stephanie Black dissecting the effects of IMF and WTO trade policies on Jamaica's predominantly agrarian economy. Includes excellent interviews with the late and former Prime Minister Michael Manley, Jamaican farmers, Free Trade Zone workers, Rastafari, Midwestern potato farmers, and President Wolfensohn of the World Bank. Scenes of oblivious white tourists on indulgence vacations are interspliced with the lives of struggling Jamaican farmers and workers in excellent juxtaposition. Plays like a feature film. Good music. Altogether dope. We can screen this whenever. Let me know.

The Weather Underground

Intriguing, semi-sensationalistic documentary about The Weather Underground, a group of 60s-70s radicals (mostly students) who, frustrated by their inability to effect change to our policies in S.E. Asia via standard means of protest, turned to violence. (Bombing office buildings, e.g.) The story is told mostly by former members of the group, several of which eventually turned themselves in. (Some are interviewed from jail.) Very informative stuff. Instructive about the political climate among students during the Vietnam War.
